Is your organization looking at options for addressing health insurance  with Obamacare starting?

Some businesses will be required to secure health insurance coverage for their employees. Very small businesses will be exempt.

No matter whether you will be required or not, you need to consider where you are relative to your competition.

If your competition provides health insurance and you do not then you may lose some of your employees as they leave for the health insurance coverage other businesses offer.

Assuming providing health insurance is not an option for your company, what can your business do to show you are concerned about employee health and hopefully retain your employees?

Here are some 7 Tips to consider:

1. Seasonal Flu Shots - arrange for nurses to come and provide flu shots for your employees who elect to take the shots during flu season. You can provide these free of charge, subsidize the cost, or just offer the convenience of the employee getting the shot at work but paying for it himself. As an added benefit this should help reduce the use of sick days during the flu season!

2. Other Immunizations - such as pneumonia, whooping cough, and tetanus are available at reasonable prices.

3. Red Cross First Aid Course - arrange for the local Red Cross to provide First Aid training to interested employees at your facility.

4. Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Training and CPR - The American Heart Association and the Red Cross offer courses. You can arrange for them to be taught at your facility.

You can purchase an AED for your facility. One source is www.americanaed.com

5. In House Team - you can have an in-house team trained and certified to handle any of these emergencies.

 Onsite Screening -

6. Life Line Screening (1-800-897-9177) – find out when they will be in your area. They may be willing to come to your site to provide onsites screenings. If not, find out where they will be located in your area and the times of screenings and allow your employees time to go for the screening.

One screening service they offer is the following package:  Carotid Artery Disease, Atrial Fibrillation, Abdominal Aortic, Peripheral Arterial Dissease, and Osteoporosis for approximately $149.

All the tests take about 45 minutes and a written report is reeceived within weeks. Additional tests cost more.

They also provide the following tests: Glucose, ALT, Complete Lipid Panel, C-Reactive Protein, AST/ALT, Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL,  Liver Enzymes, TSH, Triglycerides, AST, and Body Mass Index.

7. National Kidney Foundation (1-800-622-9010) Offers the following screening tests for FREE:

Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar, Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR), LDL, HDL, BMI, Hemoglobin A1c, Hemoglobin, Waist Circumference, Albumin to Creatine Ratio, Total Cholesterol, and Triglycrides.

Note:  Of course, you could add in opportunities for exercise, stress relief, and education on how to maintain good health. Showing that you care by providing these services will be appreciated by employees. Most of whom will respond with greater effort and motivation and your effort might be just enough to keep some from leaving.
